[Second Edition]
NAY-LOR...DU-PONT. This is where we are, ..and it's not Anacostia.
It's just Southeast for most of us...Juzz Sowfeest for some of us.
It's Seven Bee for the politicos, ..as in ANC-7B.
It's still Capicostia, ..somewhere in the blogosphere.
It's A'not-costia, ..if that helps. I just pulled that out of my...desperation? Stay with me.
It's Naylor Dupont, ..and it's always been Naylor Dupont, ..though I doubt that you'll remember all of that, because we wouldn't be having this one-sided conversation, if that worked for you.
ANC-7B and Anacostia (or ANC-8A) really are two totally different places, ..culturally, politically and socially, and have been for a very, very long time. It's like those realtors, who refer to the Atlas area of Eighth Street, as Capitol Hill. It's just plain wrong, whether you're doing that intentionally or unintentionally, and if you try telling any Penn Brancher of long-standing that he's living in Anacostia, you'd better bring your shotgun. In light of all of that, the good people of ANC-7B are justifiably particular about these regional distinctions, ..especially, if you live on Westover Drive.
Do they even know that's in Southeast? Has anyone told them? Stay with me...
While Naylor Dupont may be quieter and more socially and politically conservative - a little snootier, sometimes - Anacostia is more culturally and intellectually strident, ..with art galleries, bars, café life, live theatre and a more defined sense of its identity. For anyone, who assumes I am making the distinction between Seven Bee and Anacostia, as a put-down, ..you are gravely mistaken.
It might even be a little racist, considering most Washingtonians know that most of the black people in Washington, D.C. happen to live east of the Anacostia River. It's more than a little dismissive to continue to call this whole area 'Anacostia', assuming it's all the same, "...because isn't that where all those poor and working class, black people live?" At the very least, I think it smacks of elitism.
Why does it matter? It matters, when the D.C. City Council is making legislative decisions about what is good for 'Anacostia' and what goods and services 'Anacostia' will have access to, especially in a crisis, ..like the Derecho of 2010. It matters, when the media portays 'Anacostia' as one big, violent, open-air drug market, because that kind of thing follows us, Downtown - negatively effects our marketability for job opportunities, bank loans and other things that we are dependent on Downtown to provide us. It matters, because what is good for Anacostia will not always be good for Seven Bee.
Anyway, ..I'm spelling it out for you West Bankers, so that there are no more misunderstandings about things. This is where we are, Naylor Dupont ANC-7B, ..and that is not Anacostia.
We have every right to be very proud of that. Have a look.
